CAA Saskatchewan CarFit Events

CAA Saskatchewan hosted CarFit clinics in Yorkton and Swift Current in June and July 2017.

“It’s about optimizing view, comfort and fit for mature drivers,” said Lona Gervais, CAA Communications Specialist and CarFit Coordinator/Technician. “CarFit checkups are very educational. Each participant takes something away with them.”

Yorkton CarFit Clinic

Mature drivers from Yorkton and area attended the inaugural CarFit clinic on Saturday, June 3, 2017. It was a windy but warm day as checkups were provided for a total of 13 mature drivers. The event, which was sponsored by Haas Nissan, was held in the parking lot at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish Cultural Centre from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Special guests included Brent Murdock, President of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce, and his wife Loretta, as well as video journalist, Jessica Smith from CTV Yorkton. A CarFit technician training session was held in the morning facilitated by Louise Burridge, from Regina who is the Director of Professional Practice with the Saskatchewan Society of Occupational Therapists, and Saskatoon-based occupational therapist Christine Fleming. Ferdinand Molo, Jacqueline Gotengco and Kara Staples, three occupational therapists from Yorkton were trained as CarFit technicians.

Swift Current CarFit Clinic

It was an extremely hot, beautiful, sunny day for the first Swift Current CarFit clinic which was held on Monday, July 10 in the parking lot at the CAA Swift Current Store from 10:20 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There were 9 mature drivers that attended the event, including several special guests: Mayor Denis Perrault, City Councillor Ron Toles, the MP for Cypress Hills-Grasslands, David Anderson, and John Wall, Premier Brad Wall’s father.

Both events were well-received by participants. One of the drivers commented on what she’d learned: “It was very interesting and informative. I learned that my rear-view mirror is more adjustable than I thought and, also about some devices I can use for assistance getting in and out of my vehicle.”
