On Friday September 26 2014, CAOT and CAA hosted a CarFit Technician Training and Public Check-Up Event.
CAOT’s Interim Director of Professional Practice, Julie Lapointe and CAOT’s Communications Officer, Nicolas McCarthy, trained a diverse group of participants that included a community mobility activist, several occupational therapists and students, a medical transport operator, a Driver rehabilitation specialist and driving instructor as well as several CAOT Staff members. The CarFit Event Technician training took place at the CAOT National office.
The following morning, the group met at the parking lot of the Ottawa Hospital’s The Rehabilitation Centre to hold the Check-Up Event. We welcomed 16 older drivers in four separate lanes over the course of two hours. All the older drivers felt that they benefitted from the CarFit Check-Up and were planning to tell their friends and family about the programme and suggest they get “fitted” as well.
We were very happy with the positive outcome of the event and very appreciative of the Ottawa Hospital’s The Rehabilitation Centre for providing us with the accommodations on the day of the event.
We look forward to the spring to plan and host more events in Ottawa and across the country.
