In 2009 at the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) conference at an early morning (6:30 am!!) meeting I had the pleasure to meet with Elin Schold Davis, AOTA’s Older Driver Initiative Project Coordinator. Elin introduced me to the Carfit (www.car-fit.org) program and asked me to consider bringing it to Canada.
I was immediately impressed by the Carfit program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles “fit” them to increase safety. CAOT had a number of older driver safety initiatives underway (see www.olderdriversafety.ca) and the Carfit program would be another initiative that would fall in line with CAOT’s strategic priorities to ensure the visibility of occupational therapy and promote the role of occupational therapy in injury prevention. After a number of consultations with Elin and her American colleagues CAOT was able to successfully launch our first Carfit training and vent in Fredericton NB.
This was the first Carfit event ever offered in French! CAOT has now partnered with CAA to offer more Carfit training and events across Canada. I hope that occupational therapists across Canada embrace the Carfit program and become Carfit coordinators and host events in their region.
